the little red Honda bleeds green

“Is that a squirrel trapped in the engine, scraping and clawing to extract itself from some oily demise?” I asked myself after speeding off to grab some lunch with Chako and some of her art acquaintances.

Sadly, no. That is the sound of a lowly waterpump grinding and puking its own guts out. Could these be the last days of the little red Honda that could? I swear I could hear it gasping, “Kango…” as it suffered and sputtered. A name so many ladies have uttered in the past, but never before, I fear, with such a Rapunzel-like need to be rescued.

I did not treat my little Civic with the same care that my Japanese former roommate did. And why is it now that I choose to stray from my androgynous assignment of the little guy’s character? Regret. So often tied to females in my case along with my own ignorance and lack of attention. Such a cold day to leave her alone pondering her fate. How does a such a meager and outdated pile of metal and petroleum products pull at my heart strings so?

Ken has his past love/hate relationship with Fords. Greg focuses his attentions on Japanese trucks and German motorbikes. John shudders with passing thoughts of being marooned by his Escort. Mike lords over mechanical ladies and makes them purr. None of this says anything about human relationships but I’m sure everyone, male or female, has their own particular connection with the mechanical realm of conveyance.

I don’t think I’m ready to let go but the inevitable looms ominously. Is it really time to say goodbye?

  2. memories are the only good thing about an automobile that has bypassed usefulness.

gone are the Mazdarati and Whitey, but Big Blue hangs on.

think good thoughts as Monster Joe loads the civic into the shredder.

    say goodbye.

  3. Whither the 96 Altima? a.k.a. “God’s Altima.” What a model year! Why, I got me one parked outside right now.
